As part of their Community Health initiative, a Cameroonian non-governmental organization developed this map of the city of Douala. Douala, a major Central African port and the commercial capital of Cameroon, is in the departement of Wouri.
The map shows the locations of potential transmission sites for HIV/AIDS, STDs and TB.
It was created based on information gathered through field work in the community. Staff members use it to target their outreach and community health intervention strategies to effectively reach the most at-risk populations.
This post is a response to the Weekly Photo Challenge: Community.
looks like a very systematic approach…. also, sometimes visual aids like these help us see patterns that otherwise might not have been recognized.

Yes, I was very impressed! Although they did not have many resources, they were using some very sophisticated and effective strategies. Also, it is always so striking to me when I work in other countries how often health and human rights issues are addressed by the same organization as part of a coordinated strategy. In the US, generally the issues are not viewed as being intertwined in the way that they are in many parts of the world. Thanks for your comment!

A picture can really say much. Hiv and AIDS are problems we all should care about, and pictures like these put the problem right in front of us!
